Birding Scandinavia... Sweden - Falsterbo
The Scandinavian Birding Experience
Dates: From Manchester with SAS... 3/9 to 6/9
From London with EasyJet... 10/9 to 13/9
Falsterbo is great at any time of the year but the autumn migration is especially exciting. For the bird of prey enthusiast, Falsterbo is the place to be. With nearly three whole days and what we can cram in on the fourth day, before your return flights home, it will be none stop birding.
We will not have a day plan other than we will start at Nabben on day two and three. After that we will head to other localities depending on weather conditions and what’s about. For those who have not experienced birding at Nabben, then you can look forward to a memorable experience. Nabben in itself is a peninsula that forms part of a large low lying sand island known as Måkläppen. Here you will find uncountable numbers of Great Cormorants and Gulls. Other than that there will be a none stop movement of wildfowl and waders. However amongst these hoards of birds, we must not forget to look up. Hopefully there will be good numbers of migrating European Honey Buzzards, Marsh Harriers, Red Kites and Ospreys. Eurasian Sparrowhawks, Merlins and maybe the odd Peregrine Falcon will be playing havoc with the many migrant passerines that are passing through, especially the 1000's of Yellow Wagtail that are feeding on the golf course or trying to rest. From Nabben the next stop will either be Ljungen, Kanalen or maybe both. Once again it will be migrating birds of prey that dictate where we will be heading. Though it is always exciting watching raptors, there are other species to be seen. Skåne as the area is known has some great lakes and woodland areas. During the first three days we will be visiting such localities as Fyledalen. This is an area of mature woodland with a good population of Red Kite and usually one or two Golden Eagle. Woodland species include Black and Lesser-spotted Woodpecker and Hawfinch. We will also visit such wetland localities like Krankesjöen, Vombs ängar and the new manmade lake at Näsbyholm. Though we will spend most of time looking at wetland species, there will still be birds of prey with species like Eurasian Hobby and Osprey favouring these types of habitat. There is nothing quite like watching a Hobby dart after dragonflies over the reedbeds or a Osprey plummet to catch a fish. Many may find these wetland areas more interesting than the bird of prey localities, and that is not surprising with large numbers of waterfowl and several interesting passerines including Penduline Tit. On our last day we will try and cram in some birding before we head to the airport for the return flight back home.
